I would like to enter a plea for Hong Kong's future immigration laws to allow young people who are visiting Hong Kong to work here for a limited period of time, up to, say, six months or 12 months.
A lot of young people, mainly those in their 20s, spend time travelling around the world visiting various countries and experiencing their cultures. These people are generally travelling on very limited resources and need to pick up casual work to help meet their living expenses.
Australia, for example, has a scheme which allows young people to go there for up to 13 months and to work for not more than three months at a time in any one job. This scheme provides a useful source of casual labour for fruit picking, restaurants etc.
A similar arrangement here would be invaluable in allowing young people to visit and experience Hong Kong, while providing a useful source of labour for bars, restaurants and other businesses and help to maintain Hong Kong's cosmopolitan nature.
Would our present or future legislators please implement this? ROBERT WILSON Discovery Bay
