The numbers of people taking part in celebratory activities showed that most people supported China's resumption of sovereignty, said Xinhua (New China News Agency) deputy director Zheng Guoxiong. Mr Zheng called on Britain to co-operate fully with China on issues which remain unresolved, such as the right of abode and the deployment of a People's Liberation Army advance party. Provisional legislator Elsie Tu said she hoped for less confrontation between various parties in the remaining days. Five representatives of the Chinese Liberal Democratic Party staged a protest in Victoria Park to protest against celebrations. Sing Wai-pong from the party said there was no reason to celebrate as the territory's political and civil liberties were going to be curtailed.
