Two talented sisters and a brother hope to raise as much as $250,000 for handicapped children through their art work.

    Patricia Huen Wing-sze, 20, Ian Huen Chung-yuen, 17, and Eustacia Huen Wing-yee, 14, are raising money for Heep Hong Society for Handicapped Children.

    The Huen family began Chinese ink painting lessons nine years ago.

  An exhibition, held in the Pao Galleries of the Hong Kong Arts Centre last month featured about 140 of their works.

  Drawings of the handicapped children from Heep Hong Society were also displayed in the gallery.

  The Huens said their paintings were not for sale but had been compiled into an album costing $250 each. They hoped generous relatives and friends would help them achieve their goal.

  They said they had been doing volunteer work for the charity since they were little as their mother was a board member of Heep Hong Society.

  But they said raising money and holding their own painting exhibition was a lot more satisfying.

  The trio study abroad, but continue painting lessons during the four months they are in Hong Kong every year.

  Patricia, majoring in International Relations and East Asian Studies at Brown University in the United States, said she loved to paint flowers.

  She said she was fascinated by the myriad colours and shapes of flowers.

   Her favourite flower was hydrangea.

  Ian, who will enter Princeton University this September, said mountain ranges had captured his heart.

  'In Chinese painting, you can dab a few strokes freely and make a mountain range [appear in front of you].

  'The process is quick, but the impact is overwhelming,' said Ian.

  Ian also loved to draw shrimps because 'a few systematic strokes can change the shrimps' motions'.

  Eustacia, currently in Grade Nine, said she liked to integrate cartoon style into her Chinese ink paintings.

  Art talent and strong observation skills have made Eustacia particularly good at painting children's features and facial expressions.

  But the Huens said it was their mentor, teacher Siu Chung-ling, who maintained their continued interest in Chinese ink painting.

  Ms Siu said most parents brought their children to her because they wanted the younger generation to appreciate Chinese culture and traditions.

  Ms Siu said the Huens' paintings were attractive, but more importantly, their efforts deserved encouragement and praise.

  Patricia said it was meaningful to be able to use their art work to raise money for the needy.

  She hoped their exhibition would set an example for other young people like them and encourage handicapped children to get actively involved in arts activities.
