Mention a team of 11, and most people - sports fans in particular - will think of cricket or soccer. But instead of grassy pitches, this team plays on well-lit stages.

Given the profit-sharing traditions of most bands, very few come in the form of the orchestral pop combo My Life Story.

'A lot of record companies are scared of signing up an 11-piece band because they think it will be very costly,' says songwriter and vocalist Jake Shillingford from London.

'It is very costly - but when you see 11 musicians going crazy on stage and playing really good songs, you are still going to sell more records than if you have myself and two guys playing synthesisers.' Although Shillingford insists all the members of My Life Story contribute to the group's output, his outstanding persona and frontman status have made him the centre of attention.

'Perhaps people see the rest of My Life Story as sessionists - but there are some members of the band who have been with me for all seven years and almost all the current line-up has been together for nearly two years,' he says.

And their insistence on orchestral instruments as the sole tools of their trade has set them apart from the likes of Oasis.
