Jan Michael Gambill defeated Clinton Ferreira 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 in a second-round qualifying match, but his third-round clash with Brian MacPhie - to decide who progresses to the main draw - was washed out.

Weather permitting, the four remaining qualifying matches will start at 2 pm today on two courts.

The tournament's second seed, Marc Rosset, is scheduled to take on German Nicolas Kiefer on Centre Court some time after 7 pm, following the first main draw match of the week between Czech Daniel Vacek and Russian Alexander Volkov. The last scheduled match for tonight is between American Justin Gimelstob and Swede Henrik Holm.

There will also be three doubles qualifiers played on court number two.

In yesterday's draw for the Salem doubles competition, top seeds Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde of Australia were slated to meet Ferreira and Danny Sapsford in the first round.

Carl Chang, brother of singles top seed Michael, will partner Japan's Shuzo Matsuoka in the doubles as wild card entries.
