Plants that aren't vegetarian
Carnivorous plants are usually found in boggy ground where there is very little nitrogen in the soil.
The Venus flytrap Dianaea, a native of North America, can sometimes be bought in flower shops in Hong Kong as a 'pet'.
When a fly lands on the hinged leaves they snap shut in about 1/2 second and trap the insect inside. The plant then secretes red digestive juices which take about 10 days to absorb the substances of the insect.
Bladderwort Utricularia is a common aquarium and stream plant in Hong Kong.
It floats freely without roots producing yellow flowers in summer and autumn. The submerged leaves have bladders which trap small aquatic animals - both fishspawn and insects.
The bladders have trapdoors which snap open when the fine sensory hair outside the trap are touched; the victim is sucked in and the door closed again within 1/35 of second.
