I refer to David Dalton's article headlined, 'Executing a bloody injustice', which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on April 9, regarding the celebrated alleged summary execution by the Philippine National Police of 11 members of the Kuratong Baleleng crime syndicate, In would like to inform readers that: A case of multiple murder is now pending with Sandiganbayan, the constitutional court created to deal with misconduct by government personnel, against some ranking police officers allegedly involved in the crime.

In view of the requirements of due process which we faithfully observe, the hearings could take some time. The Philippines adheres to its commitment to justice and peace and order, hence, this case has been given the attention necessary to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The threats against the physical safety of those involved in the prosecution of the case are natural consequences of their dedication to duty. Nevertheless, the Philippine authorities are not taking these threats lightly. On the contrary, they have taken steps to ensure that their physical well-being is taken care of and that there shall be no obstacles to the performance of their mandated tasks.

Please be assured that the rule of law is of the highest priority in our governmental concerns.

Towards this end, we shall maintain our efforts towards the achievement of a just and peaceful society.

Vice-Consul RAUL S. HERNANDEZ Spokesman Philippine Consulate General
