A vital piece of evidence in a robbery trial was literally turned on its head yesterday as a defence lawyer challenged a witness who claimed she had identified his client.
Yu Sau-kuen, 31, said she picked out the alleged robber at an ID parade by writing his number - six - on a piece of paper and handing it to the police.
But Robert Forrest, defending, showed the jury that if the paper was turned upside down, the 'six' would become a nine and therefore relate to someone else on the parade.
He suggested Ms Yu may have been mistaken about the number of the man she identified and said there was nothing on the piece of paper to indicate which way up it should be held.
The witness admitted there was often confusion between the number six and the number nine.
She accepted that some people place a dot at the bottom of the number to show which way up it should be, but said this was not her practice.
