We've probably all seen Sony's ad campaign for its new game adventure Kowloon's Gate, set in the now-demolished Walled City.

 High-resolution computer graphics present an intense gothic Asian world, and lead the player into the deepest regions of a parallel world.

 Based on shamanism and tradition, the game opens the gates to a post-cyberpunk reality.

 It begins in Hong Kong, where you are called to the 'Hong Kong Supreme Committee of Fung Shui' following an extraordinary incident in the city. According to the higher ranked fung shui practitioners, it seems that fung shui does not exist in the Yin World.

 The walled city of Kowloon has reappeared because the expansion of the Yin World without fung shui has brought about an imbalance between the two primal elements of light and darkness.

 Your mission is to establish fung shui in the Yin World.

 To accomplish your mission, you must locate the four sacred beasts. In the Yang World, natural geographical features are viewed as the four sacred beasts, but how will they be represented in the Yin World?  By immersing yourself in the lore of the 'shadow world', you approach the solution of this mystery.

 To help you in your mission, you are informed at the Supreme Committee of fung shui that you will receive one important item during your adventure - a 'lao-pan', the fung shui scope. First, you must search for the lao-pan that is essential to the location of the four sacred beasts.

 You are a master of fung shui , the Chinese art of designing a harmonious environment through the analysis of energy flows, who has come over from the Yang World, the world of light.

  You will not always be greeted warmly by people you meet. But do not despair - by boldly persisting and persuading them to talk, you will eventually be given a task, or a path to follow.

 It will be difficult to tell at a glance whether the characters you meet are good or evil, and you will not be able to form partnerships with other characters. You must take up the adventure alone.

 The following are the main characters with whom you will interact:   Rich (voice by Eiichiro Suzuki)  A bar-keeper at a saloon on the first floor of a hotel called the Lung Song Hotel. He regards Shao-hei as a younger sister, and looks after her. Although at first he seems like a tough guy, as you get to know him you'll find out he is a man who is pure at heart.

 Shao-hei (voice by Nozomi Nonaka)  Recently she has been having a recurring dream about her older sister, who predicts that she will meet someone. Shao-hei believes that the dream and your appearance are linked in some way. Although Rich and the others don't take her dream seriously, she is determined to tell you all that she has on her mind. What does her dream mean, and what is its importance? This is what you must uncover.

 Game Kid (voice by Run Sasaki)  A game maniac who boasts that his technique is the best in the walled city. He hangs out in the arcade shops in Kowloon Cyber Central, and has a lot of knowledge about computers and networks.

 Wei (voice by Jurota Kosugi)  Is the head teacher at a school for the healing art of ch'i. He seems to know a lot of what is going on in the Walled City of the Yin World. But being a cautious man, he is hesitant to reveal the truth.

 Li Hong (voice by Ginzo Matsuo)  Runs a pawn shop, but that doesn't seem to be how he makes his living. He spends most of his time collecting antiques from around the world. Although he may appear to be hard to get along with, in fact he is a very righteous individual.

 Onmyoji (voice by Takeshi Aono)  A mysterious, reclusive scientist. He is reported to possess mystical powers. Although he seldom shows it, he has a spontaneous side that makes him hard to dislike.

 Altogether, the voices of more than 60 actors appear in Kowloon's Gate.

 The Walled City of Kowloon is wired with a communications network called Kowloonet.

 Netizens use the Net to communicate via e-mail and real-time chats, much like the Internet today.

 By obtaining an access card, you can participate in the Net and may learn more about the real status of the Walled City by listening in to Net-chat.

 Eventually, when one of the Netizens becomes aware of your presence, the adventure will enter a new phase.

 The Network is also home to certain invisible residents.

 Guili is the name of the evil spirits that appear in the deepest recesses of the Walled City.

 Monsters are born when evil attaches itself to things cast off by human beings.

 Although the Guili themselves do not attack people, it is impossible to proceed within the city until their evil has been cleansed. You must determine the attributes of the evil lurking within each Guili and remove it in order to proceed with the adventure.

 Kowloon's Gate features two kinds of dungeons: JPEG and real-time. The JPEG dungeons consist of linked movies using computer graphics and are named for the JPEG image compression technology that they use.

 They are used for 'adventure' scenes in which you gather information through conversations with other characters, or give or receive items.

 In the JPEG dungeons, movement from one point to another is shown using movies. Everything is faithfully reproduced, from the filth and degenerate alleys to the feeling of the wet, slimy floors.

  After you have fulfilled certain conditions in the JPEG areas, you proceed to the real-time dungeons.

 These are areas consisting of three-dimensional polygons in which you must seek to fulfil certain requests.

 In this way, your journey alternates between JPEG and real-time dungeons as you make your way to the final objective.

 The real-time dungeons are based on the theme of indefiniteness - a space in which buildings appear to break through their walls and combine with neighbouring structures.

 A sense of maliciousness is pervasive as noxious spirits fill the air.
