Typhoon Isa, packing winds of more than 240 km/h, forced the cancellation of first-round play in the US$250,000 DFS Galleria Guam Open yesterday and it's doubtful if the waterlogged course will be playable today.

Organisers called off the first round and re-scheduled the tournament to 54 holes after the typhoon lashed the area early yesterday.

It is the first time in the two-year history of the Asian PGA's Omega Tour that an event has been shortened because of bad weather.

'We have never lost a day's play before, even though we have had to contend with a couple of bad storms,' said tournament director Antonio Occampo. 'The weather outlook still looks poor and we will assess the situation again first thing in the morning. The course is very waterlogged and it's still raining.' Meanwhile, steering clear of injury and illness will be key objectives for Scotsman John Wither as he prepares to begin the defence of his Volvo China Tour Order of Merit crown next week.

Last year, Wither learned of his triumph while recuperating in his hotel room from a combination of exhaustion, food poisoning and shin splints which forced him to withdraw from the final event.

Undeterred by those off-course setbacks, Wither will attempt to repeat his on-course success over the four-leg circuit which carries total prize money of US$300,000.
