Melvin Tong Man-chung experienced the highs and lows of a touring tennis professional in a hectic week he will not forget.
Hong Kong's No 1 helped defeat Saudi Arabia in Davis Cup competition, winning both his singles in the territory's 4-1 victory in Riyadh, ensuring Hong Kong remains in Asia-Oceania Group Two.
Then less than 48 hours later he took on Michael Chang and came crashing down to earth after a thumping by the 1989 French Open champion.
Melvin, a wild-card in the Salem Open, won only 12 points in losing 6-0, 6-1 to the world No 3.
But he did receive praise from Chang, who went on to win the tournament convincingly by beating Australia's Patrick Rafter in the final.
'Melvin played some pretty good tennis,' Chang said. 'It's not an easy thing to do, coming from Saudi Arabia and playing. He's got a good forehand and a good serve . . . He'll continue to improve.' Melvin said: 'It was a good chance to play Michael and I learned a lot.'
