Wine of the week

Chateau des Tour, Montagne-St Emilion 1989. THE beautiful 14th-century Chateau des Tours lies across the River Brabanne to the north of St Emilion, which is permitted to use the coveted ''St Emilion'' appellation.

However, since the 19th century, the area has been entitled to use the appellation ''Montagne-St Emilion''.

The chateau, which became a wine growing estate in the late 19th century, was in a neglected condition by 1945.

It was then bought by Louis Yerbes who greatly improved the wines but its resurgence came in 1983 with its acquisition by the Marne et Champagne group.

Today it presents a characteristic Bordeaux at an attractive price.

Its colour is deep ruby. The nose is plummy with hints of allspice. On the palate the allspice is apparent as is a touch of burned caramel.

It improves if decanted an hour before serving.
