Chinese University increases use of Net for research, studies

Internet

On-line 'Live Poet Society', art galleries and even surgical operations are just a few of the teaching applications students of the Chinese University of Hong Kong can experience over the Internet.

Using the Internet as an academic and research tool is being promoted worldwide. Hongkong Telecom is looking at implementing Internet/intranet technology at kindergarten level.

A number of departments of the Chinese University are already using the Internet as a teaching aid as well as a propaganda tool to advertise their respective activities.

The department of architecture puts some examples of its interior design on to the web for junior students to study or to help students find a job.

Other keen users of Internet are the students from the English-language teaching unit who can share literature experiences via email as well as through several international projects going on among countries with English as a second language.

The orthopaedics and traumatology department of the Faculty of Medicine is also doing away with traditional teaching materials.

Slides, diagrams and motion video have been digitised and put on a database for teachers and students to use at their own request.

The same was applied to patient records and clinical cases from the Prince of Wales Hospital - the teaching hospital for the university.

These are examples of what is on the Campus Network, put together by the university's information technology service unit.
