Electric trolleybuses could be used instead of trams for short-haul trips on future reclamation areas. Hongkong Tramways has proposed either to extend its lines or construct a new tram circuit serving the Central to Wan Chai reclamation. The Wan Chai District Board will discuss the proposals today, members said. Board member Dr John Tse Wing-ling said trolleybuses should serve routes between Causeway Bay and Central, particularly on reclamation sites. Dr Tse said apart from being environmentally friendly, the buses were better and more cost effective. 'Although they may seem a little old-fashioned, they will allow us good prospects for future development,' Dr Tse said. 'Also, the costs will not be too high as we are not talking about a rail system here.' Hongkong Tramways spokesman Wegan Chiang Kei-wai said the company would look into setting up the buses as an alternative to trams should the Government decide to back the proposal.
