New Territories motorists will soon be able to avoid traffic jams by parking at KCR stations at discount rates and taking the train. A 'park and ride' trial was yesterday endorsed by the Transport Advisory Committee and could be implemented by the end of the year at Sheung Shui station. Committee chairman Dr Cheng Hon-kwan said difficulties finding a suitable location to conduct trials had delayed the project. 'We have a [200-space] car park about five minutes' walk from the KCR station and its lease will be up soon. We hope the Government can rent it out for this trial.' The scheme is to encourage motorists living away from mass transit facilities to drive to the nearest station instead of into town. Kendy Chan Kin-chung of the Hong Kong Automobile Association, which has pushed for the scheme, warned drivers may not be interested without cost incentives. Dr Cheng said parking during the trial could be 25 to 30 per cent cheaper than normal rates.
