A burglar who used his Doberman pinscher to help him steal from religious retreats tried to kill himself three times in repentance, a court heard yesterday. Leung Kwok-wai, 22, made the suicide attempts early last month while in custody awaiting sentence, Noel Leung Chun-kuen told the District Court yesterday. Jailing Leung for 3.5 years, Deputy Judge Toh Lai-kuen told him his death would only cause more pain to his family. Leung admitted 11 charges of burglary between June and September last year. He pretended he was walking his dog when he was really casing the retreats and holiday flats. He was caught in October when the manager of a retreat saw him and his dog, grew suspicious and called the police. The dog is now with a new owner.
