New Territories police chiefs warned yesterday that getting home after the Lantau Link's fireworks display tomorrow could be 'like the Long March'.

Most people attending the 20-minute, $5 million fireworks celebrating the opening of the Tsing Ma Bridge can expect to walk for between one and three hours before reaching any major public transport after the event.

With most surrounding thoroughfares, including Castle Peak Road, closed to traffic, spectators will be three to eight kilometres from bus or MTR stations.

'It's going to be a bit like the Long March. But if everything goes smoothly as planned it shouldn't be so bad,' Tsuen Wan District Senior Inspector Steven Lok Chun-kei said.

About 300,000 people are expected to pack a remote, 16-kilometre stretch of the Castle Peak Road opposite the Tsing Ma Bridge for the fireworks at 8 pm.

New Territories South Senior Superintendent Colin Keenan announced yesterday a high command centre would open tomorrow to take charge of about 2,500 police officers along Castle Peak Road and in Tsuen Wan for the event. That will be in addition to the regional command and communications centre which is open 24 hours a day.
