Some 10,000 frequent traveller cards designed to slash waiting times in immigration queues will be up for grabs early next year.

There are also plans for the territory to join the new Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) smart-card scheme to streamline entry and exit procedures for Hong Kong business people travelling in the region.

Deputy Secretary for Security Alex Fong Chi-wai said the frequent traveller cards were intended for foreigners who brought economic benefits to Hong Kong.

The average immigration clearance time is 30 minutes, but a card carrier would go straight through.

Mr Fong said: 'The immigration officers will know you have been pre-screened so they won't ask questions. There will also be a special lane so you won't have to queue.' The Government hopes to introduce a pilot scheme with 10,000 cards.

Each card is expected to cost a few hundred dollars and will be sold on a first come-first served basis.
