Stand-up comedians Adam Bloom and Mark Maier are busy perpetuating a tradition which hit its zenith with Ben Elton but does not look like fading.

Bloom, first on, at least on opening night, said: 'I haven't got any jokes, but I'm very nice.' Analysts might have said he was right about the jokes, and had perhaps given his pleasant self a night off so he could be relatively boorish on stage.

Not that that mattered, since Bloom found in the shoulder-to-shoulder gweilo audience (British by a big majority, by the sound of it) the perfect receptacle for his rapid-fire stories of real or imagined London life, and for his 'gags', constructed on the edifice of comedy's lowest common denominator - sex.

It was not long before penises, circumcision and the usual associated bad language had made their appearance and dictated the tone of his 40 minutes of fame.

Still, the audience laughed in all the right places, and having pitched his act perfectly to the undiscerning mob, he went down a storm.

Bloom commented at one point: 'The locals are going to hate me.' Not much chance of that. There weren't any there.
