A recommendation for the position of Chief Justice after the handover may be finalised as early as next week.
It is understood the Judicial Officers' Recommendation Commission will meet in the middle of next week to try to select a candidate.
Contenders include Executive Councillor Andrew Li Kwok-nang QC, Court of Appeal Justice Benjamin Liu Tsz-ming and colleagues Mr Justice Henry Litton and Mr Justice Charles Ching.
The last two are believed to hold overseas passports which must be given up on securing the post.
The first two are said to be favoured by Tung Chee-hwa and Xinhua respectively. But one commission member said: 'No one has tried to influence me.'
