Seventeen-year-old Wong Yau-ki was overall champion and winner in the secondary school section of the Urban Council's International Arts Carnival 1997 Poster Design Competition.

  Judges decided that Yau-ki's design was of a high standard and his choice of colours was skilful.

  He is a Form Six student at Ju Ching Chu Secondary School, Tuen Mun.

  The poster featured 10 different kinds of artist in action and symbolised the spirit of the carnival's summer programmes. The design will be used as the carnival's main poster.

  'The response was overwhelming, with 1,101 entries from primary and secondary school students,' a spokesman for the Urban Services Department said.

  Results of the competition were:   Secondary School Section: Winner: Wong Yau-ki, 17, Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Tuen Mun) (Form Six).

  First runner-up: Lee Kit-wah, 16, Belilios Public School (Form Four).

  Second runner-up: Lok Wai-lin, 16, St Simon's Lui Ming Choi Secondary Technical School (Form Five).

  Outstanding entries: Ida Hui Ka-wah, 15, Heep Yunn School (Form Four); Law Siu-pong, 16, Shun Tak Fraternal Association Leung Kau Kui College (Form Four); Law Yan-man, 15, Madam Lau Kam Lung Secondary School of Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery (Form Four); Ngan Oi-wa, 16, Belilios Public School (Form Four); Chin Son-sam, 17, Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Tuen Mun) (Form Five).

 Primary School Section:  Winner: Li Long-yan, 12, Heep Yunn School (Primary Six).

  First runner-up: Chan Kwan-wah Samantha, 10, Diocesan Girls' Junior School (Primary Five).

  Second runner-up: Lester Yu, 10, German Swiss International School (Primary Six).

  Outstanding entries: Stephanie Yu, seven, St Stephen's Girls' Primary School (Primary Two); Lester Yu, 10, German Swiss International School; Wong Kam-yuk, 12, SKH Holy Spirit Primary School (Primary Six); Chiang Lai, 10, True Light Middle School of Hong Kong (Primary Five); Lau Hing-po, 11, Sau Mau Ping Catholic Primary School (Primary Five); Ip Choi-mei, 11, St Matthew's Lutheran School (Primary Five).

  The winners, first runners-up and second runners-up in the two sections won book vouchers worth $1,500, $1,200 and $800 respectively.

  They also each receive a trophy.

  The 10 outstanding entries each won a $500 book voucher.

  Overall champion Wong Yau-ki will be awarded a grand trophy and an additional $500 book voucher.

  The judges of the competition included the campus co-ordinator of Hong Kong Institute of Education's Gratham Campus, Chu Lo Shin-yee; curator of Hong Kong Museum of Art Tang Hoi-chiu; manager of Z-House Design Thomas Lau Chung-hing, and the Urban Services Department's principal information officer (culture), Gabriel Tong Ying-lun.

  The International Arts Carnival is an annual summer festival organised by the council to provide performing arts activities for children and families. It will be staged from July 24 to August 7.
