Shenzhen's ports handled 75,529 teu (20 ft equivalent units) of containers in March, making a total of 207,334 teu for the first quarter of this year, according to officials.

 A Hong Kong Shippers Council report said the Shenzhen ports - Shekou, Chiwan and Yantian - expected total throughput to reach one million teu by the end of this year.

 'About 55 per cent of Shenzhen's total throughput is handled in Yantian, while 22 per cent is handled in Shekou and the rest in Chiwan,' it said.

 In 1996, Shenzhen ports - which together make up the fourth largest container port in China - handled 588,000 teu, which was up 107 per cent over 1995.

 Shekou Container Terminal (SCT) has two standard container berths with a quay length of 650 metres, supported by four quay cranes and eight yard gantry cranes.

 Its alongside draught is 14 metres while the approach channel is 12.5 metres.

 The terminal, which occupies about 200,000 square metres, includes a 6,000 sq metre container freight station and bonded warehouse.

 SCT, with an annual capacity of 550,000 teu, has a freight rail line linking it to Changsha in the hinterland.

 SCT's phase two development, which is under detailed study, will include construction of two standard berths with a quay length of 650 metres.

 Four post-Panamax quay cranes and eight rubber-tyred gantry cranes will be installed.

 Once complete, the second-phase development will increase SCT's capacity to one million teu a year.

 In 1996, SCT's total container cargo throughput was 137,774 teu, an increase of 21.96 per cent over 1995.

 Over 90 per cent of the outward containers were laden while about 20 per cent of the inward containers were empty.

 It was estimated that SCT's throughput would rise by 9 to 16 per cent to between 150,000 and 160,000 teu in 1997. It handled 36,000 teu in the first quarter.

 According to SCT's own studies, a 40-foot laden container shipped directly from SCT to the United States would cost about US$175 less than it would if shipped through Hong Kong port.

 Similarly, a savings of US$330 could be had by shipping a 20-ft container to Europe through SCT rather than through Hong Kong.

 The Chiwan Kaifeng Terminal (KFT), situated opposite SCT, has a 325-metre quay length and a 14-metre draught alongside.

 It is equipped with three quay cranes, six rubber-tyred gantry cranes and two stackers for empty containers, seven trailers and four forklifts.

 KFT also has dedicated berths for bulk cargo.

 When KFT's phase two development is completed in July, the terminal will have a quay length of 650 metres. It has plans to construct up to eight standard berths.

 More equipment will be purchased, including a quay crane and three more rubber-tyred gantry cranes, two container stackers and seven more trailers.

 Container handling capacity will be increased to 150,000 teu a year.

 Last year, Chiwan handled 97,000 teu, representing a 50.9 per cent growth over 1995.

 Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT) now has two container berths and a general cargo berth. The terminal, whose draught is 14 metres, is in the midst of its second-phase development.

 The first berth of the new development section is expected to be completed in the second half of 1998. The remainder of the expansion is expected to be completed in about three years, giving YICT six container berths with a quay length of 2,350 metres. It will be equipped with 20 quay cranes and 48 yard gantry cranes.

 Total handling capacity will rise to two million teu.

 In the first quarter of this year, YICT handled about 150,000 teu. Total throughput was expected to reach more than 600,000 teu this year.
