In many ways, they are direct opposites, but for our purposes, they are the perfect couples. We refer to Chris Patten and Elsie Tu; Martin Lee Chu-ming and Nellie Fong; Tung Chee-hwa and Emily Lau; Kevin Sinclair and any female United Nations representative; Rita Fan and a human being.
They are invited to a party - and so, dear reader, are you.
A group of charity people and contributors to this column are organising Lai See's official handover party, which is called Hands Across the Border. It will start at noon on June 30.
There are two aims. One is to move the emphasis of handover day away from politics and flag-changing, and return it to what it really is all about: people and the coming together of different cultures.
The other is to have a bit of a laugh. Other events organised for the handover seem spectacularly lacking in imagination or a sense of fun.
This is how it works. Each party-goer will be handcuffed to another individual at exactly noon on June 30. The shackles will be unlocked at noon on July 1.
