Digital imaging is just one area of the IT industry in which rapid advances help save space, time and money. Most publishing companies have already moved to digital library systems.

However, there is a tendency to treat the digital images with a little less respect than the hard copy.

What do you do when your digital library is full? Some companies will want to sell you more capacity, alternative storage mediums such as Syquest, Zip or Jaz drives, rewritable CDs or Magneto-Optical CDs.

But what if you have no space, the shops are closed, or you have no more money to spend on a storage budget? What happens when the sheer volume of pictures is overwhelming? Where can you put it? Or do you simply delete it? It is all too tempting to kill a file. It just takes a few simple keystrokes.

In comparison, to throw out a pile of photographic prints is a deliberate, physical act. The prints probably will sit in the rubbish bin for hours or days, during which time you probably will change your mind, or somebody else will change it for you.

It is always more trouble to throw out pictures or shred them - than it is to keep them, or postpone your decision about throwing them away.
