Three universities in Hong Kong have been chosen among the best 10 institutions in Asia.

 Hong Kong University, which trains most civil servants, including 19 out of the top 26 appointed to the Special Administrative Region government, was ranked third.

 The Chinese University was fourth and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was 10th.

 The University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, both in Japan, were first and second.

 The ranking of universities was conducted by Asiaweek magazine.

 Factors governing an institution's placing included academic reputation, faculty resources, student selection, value for money, student-to-teacher ratio, and average teacher pay and benefits.

 Hong Kong University, founded in 1911, is the oldest university in the territory.

 Past students have included Dr Sun Yat-sen and Chief Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang.

 The Chinese University was singled out for its large campus and strong commitment to Chinese culture, while the University of Science and Technology was recognised for its good facilities.

 Ann Morrison, Asiaweek editor, said more students were seeking higher education as the region became more affluent.

 'Asian institutions are responsible for this, and increasingly students are choosing to stay in the region,' she said.

 'The fact that three of the six Hong Kong universities made the top 10 is testament to Hong Kong's place as an educational centre and to its spirit of competitiveness.'  The rankings appear in the magazine's May 16 issue.
