The Democratic Party is still by far the most popular among voters, a poll commissioned by the South China Morning Post revealed yesterday.

The party would get 25.1 per cent of the vote, 15 points ahead of the Liberal Party if voters cast one vote to choose their most ideal political representatives in an election, the ACR poll said.

Democratic Party vice-chairman Dr Yeung Sum said the result would encourage the party to continue its fight for democracy. 'Though we will leave the Legco chamber for a year, we will continue our work in the community and speak out on unreasonable things,' he said.

Dr Yeung said he was confident the party would be able to get 'certain seats' in the first legislature in 1998.

'If it is a single vote, multi-seat system, I am not confident that we can score 19 seats as now. But, I am confident that our popularity will enable us to gain certain seats,' he said.

The pro-China Federation of Trade Unions came third with seven per cent, and The Frontier took five per cent.
