The transformation of former command economies promises to be the greatest economic show on earth, a leading US investment consultant says. 'That's going to be the biggest economic explosion, investment opportunity the planet has ever seen or ever will see,' George Russell, chairman of investment-management firm Frank Russell Co, said. Mr Russell has just led 40 of the world's largest fund managers and pension-fund sponsors on a 10-day fact-finding mission to the mainland. He came away convinced of China's improving economic potential. The delegation, whose combined investment capability is about US$1 trillion, met Vice-Premier Zhu Rongji and other high-level Chinese officials. 'We see China's economy continuing to grow in all sectors, with an especially large demand for investments in the sectors of public infrastructure, power and telecommunications,' Mr Russell said. Delegation members belong to a non-profit association of large investors who have, since 1990, sought to identify investment opportunities in emerging economies. The Russell 20-20 Association, as the group is known, conducts a fact-finding mission to a selected area each year. The group last visited China four years ago. Mr Russell said that since that visit, its members had invested between $2 billion and $3 billion in the mainland. 'It's predictable that this group is going to increase steadily over time their investments in China,' he said. 'Small pension funds follow where big pension funds go.' Mr Russell said he had long championed increased international investment by US pension funds.
