Another virulent condition gripped the territory last night - Triple Trio fever. Not expected to last more than 24 hours, its major symptom is an insatiable desire to bet on the world's most popular, and lucrative, wager. The only known cure is to find the first three past the post - any order will do - in tonight's third, fourth and sixth events at Sha Tin. By last night, a record jackpot pool of $55 million carried forward from the last two Wednesday race meetings had prompted punters to part with another $116.4 million. The previous record carry-over of $52 million, on January 22, led to pre-sales of $120 million and a record total pool of $209.9 million. Tonight's total pool is likely to get close to establishing a new record. Off-course betting centres were crowded for much of yesterday, despite opening for longer than usual. But the real rush came after 5 pm when more than $80 million was bet as old and young, weak and strong, rich and poor chased the biggest pot of gold racing has yet to provide. The territory's two racecourses, Sha Tin and Happy Valley, are set to be packed tonight as the only way to bet the Triple Trio today is on-course, or via the Jockey Club's Customer Input Terminals. But don't be tempted to try covering every option. A minimum $5 stake on the 48 million possible winning combinations would cost you a cool $24 million.
