A new Japanese school opened in Tai Po yesterday to meet the demands of the growing Japanese population.
The Japanese International School, on Tai Po Road near the Chinese University, started with 250 students in classes from Primary One to Six.
Most students are Japanese, but the school will start an international stream in September for English-speaking children.
The new school was built as the primary section of the Hong Kong Japanese School in Happy Valley was over capacity.
More than 25,000 Japanese live in Hong Kong, including 1,700 primary schoolchildren and 480 secondary students.
The school has 40 regular classrooms, 18 special classrooms such as science laboratories, computer room and gymnasium, and an outdoor playing field.
