Tung decides to stay put - but spread out
Tung Chee-hwa has chosen his home of 20 years - Grenville House in Magazine Gap Road - as his official residence.
But he plans to double his floorspace by taking over the adjoining flat.
The Chief Executive-designate is understood to have rejected all other options, including the official residences of the Governor and the Chief Justice, to remain in the second-floor flat he bought in 1976, sources said.
The 3,700 square-foot D-block apartment at Grenville House - and the mirror-image C-block flat into which he is expected to expand - are each estimated to be worth $35 million. A government debate on how to finance the Chief Executive's enlarged residence has still to be resolved.
But Mr Tung will still have to move, albeit temporarily.
The 37-year-old Grenville House is about to undergo major renovation, so Mr Tung is expected to move just a minute's drive uphill to The Harbourview, a two-year-old block at 11 Magazine Gap Road.
