A shotgun wedding may be in the offing for two cliques of independent members of the provisional legislature.

Following the tradition of the current legislature, the interim body has spawned a Breakfast Group that meets every Friday at 7.45 am. But it has a rival in the Tea Club, which meets on Thursdays at 11.30 am.

Sources said the Breakfast Group, convened by Eric Li Ka-cheung, had proposed a marriage with the Tea Club.

Negotiations began after three members of the Breakfast Group - Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, Peggy Lam Pei Yu-dja and Ng Ching-fai - were invited to join the Tea Club.

It is understood Mr Li was worried the Breakfast Group could collapse if members decided to join more than one group.

Convened by Sophie Leung Lau Yau-fun, members of the Tea Club are all legislature newcomers. They are Ng Leung-sing, Yuan Wu, Timothy Fok Chun-ting and Raymond Ho Chung-tai.
