Parties from across the political spectrum yesterday called on the Preparatory Committee to stop work. If it does not, they fear, it could undermine Hong Kong's autonomy.

Bruce Liu Sing-lee of the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood said the committee should halt work now as it had worked out how the first posthandover legislature would be formed.

Mr Liu said: 'It would have adverse effects if it continues to exist. It would be viewed as a super-king to the Special Administrative Region government.' Democratic Party vice-chairman Anthony Cheung Bing-leung said it was just a matter of procedure for the work of the Preparatory Committee to end.

Ambrose Lau Hon-chuen, chairman of the pro-Beijing Hong Kong Progressive Alliance, also supported the view.
