The importance of trees to our environment is the focus of this year's Green Hong Kong Campaign. Organised by the Urban Council, it includes a King of Hong Kong Urban Trees Competition aimed at encouraging wider community participation in the awareness campaign. An Urban Council spokesman said members of the public and organisations could nominate their favourite trees from nine urban districts on Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula. A panel comprising tree experts and other environmentalists will select an outstanding tree in each district to progress to the finals. Judging criteria will include tree height, trunk diameter, crown spread, form, health, special features, rarity, ecological value and historical value. To encourage nominations, people will receive a souvenir on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last. Nomination forms are available at the Urban Services Department's District Recreation, Amenities and Sports offices, Urban Council public libraries, and urban district offices of the Home Affairs Department. You can also get them via the Internet at http://www . usd.gov.hk/campaign.hml. The competition is co-organised by the Conservancy Association and RTHK. For further inquiries call 2723 6767.
