A dramatic expansion of links with the mainland could follow from a study by Government consultants.

The report will focus on the effect construction of the $16 billion Lingdingyang bridge and the Shenzhen Western Corridor would have on the territory's road network up to 2020 and whether extra links are needed.

There will also be an assessment of the impact from improvements to the three existing road border crossings, at Lok Ma Chau, Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok, and the development of new rail, ferry and port connections.

The study, to be carried out by MVA Asia, Mouchel Asia and seven other consultants, will include more reliable statistics from both sides of the border, so that accurate transport forecasts can be carried out.

SAR Executive Council member Leung Chun-ying said the changing pattern of cross-border trade and business over the past few years had made forward planning very difficult.

There had been a 15 per cent increase in the number of travellers from the mainland, and a switch to cars at the expense of rail travel.
