Did you always want to be a school principal? Originally my personal interest was in the pursuit of knowledge and continual development at tertiary level. But when I graduated from the University of Hong Kong, a few schoolmates planned to set up a school.
The establishment proved highly successful and I have been principal from the very beginning when it was only an evening school.
Describe your style of headship? I ruled the school by division of labour so my colleagues would not be afraid of talking to me.
I always am ready to accept other viewpoints. But I will not easily back down from my own stand. A principal must have his own opinion even if it does not always prove to be correct.
What is the most demanding part of a principal's job? To organise an effective division of labour and co-operation. I have been lucky to have worked with such a co-operative team.
How do you compare today's challenges with those of 10 years ago? Teaching now is not that simple. Before you can teach, you have to gain the students' attention and heighten their interest.
