Motorists heading for Tung Chung have been warned to avoid the minor roads around Tsing Yi to prevent a repeat of last Sunday's traffic jams.

Police might divert cars away from the island if congestion becomes as bad as last week, the Transport Department warned yesterday.

There was a two-hour jam last Sunday when traffic on Tsing Yi Road West backed up past Tsing Yi North Bridge.

The route is the main access point for New Territories vehicles heading for Tung Chung.

The department is now asking New Territories motorists to bypass those roads and head south to Mei Foo, where they can switch on to the West Kowloon Expressway. The viaduct crosses over the island direct to the Cheung Ching Tunnel and on to Tsing Ma Bridge.

But Kwai Tsing District Board members said that motorists were likely to ignore the advice.
