A massive manhunt has been launched on New York's Lower East Side after the murder of an 11-year-old girl whose family only arrived from China a year ago.
Fifty police officers combed their way through the dirty streets surrounding Chinatown after the body of Fujian immigrant, Wu Quinrong, was found floating in the East River.
Quinrong, who had been strangled, had gone missing a fortnight earlier.
Parents at her primary school in Chinatown now fear more abductions.
Police are searching for a tall, bearded middle-aged white man who was seen with an Asian girl, who was crying, on the New York subway the same day Quinrong disappeared.
They have also offered an US$11,000 (HK$85,100) reward for information.
'This is a great tragedy, and we will pursue this until we track down the person responsible,' said Police Commissioner Howard Safir.
