Qian sees vital step

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen yesterday hailed Hong Kong's return to China as an important step for the peaceful reunification of the mainland.

In an article in the official journal of the Party's Organisation Department, Mr Qian said the crux of the 'one country, two systems' policy was one China with Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as its inseparable parts. He said Hong Kong's experience would be vital in helping to resolve the Taiwan problem.

Mr Qian said Hong Kong would be a good supplement to the development of China, providing capital and technology.
