Naomi Lee's story headlined 'Action to prevent teachers humiliating young pupils' (South China Morning Post, May 20) and your editorial headlined 'Classroom methods' (May 27) referred to a $3 million Education Department project to 're-educate established staff' on disciplinary attitudes.

This is not the case.

We are considering an extension of our student discipline services to primary schools. Our intention is to organise workshops and training courses to help teachers acquire the knowledge and master the skills required to help pupils.

The Student Discipline Section of our department aims to offer pro-active assistance and positive advice to schools on student discipline.

We organise school visits regularly in order to promote the whole school approach to discipline. We disseminate information and resource materials to teachers through seminars, workshops and newsletters.

We also have a resource centre to serve as a venue for exchange of views and mutual support among schools.
