AMBITIOUS Frankwell kicked off their Division A1 campaign on a winning note at the MacPherson Stadium, Mongkok, last night, but not before surviving a spirited late charge by underdogs Suntex.

Frankwell, boosted by the signings of former Seasonal star Perry Young and his brother Barry, sprang to a comfortable 52-39 lead at half-time but were given a scare as Suntex staged a late revival and barely hung on for a 98-95 victory.

Team manager Fung Shiu-wai breathed a sigh of relief when the buzzer went to signal the end of the match but nevertheless was happy with his team's overall performance.

He said: ''We didn't make any substitutions because the coach is keen that we start off with a first-up win and he wanted to stick with our starting line-up throughout the match.

''The players were very tired towards the end and it didn't help when we lost David (Robinson) to five fouls with three minutes left.

''I think it was still a very good win for us and if we continue to play like we did in the early stages of this match I'm confident we can at least achieve our goal of making the top four this year.'' Frankwell got off to a promising start with Macau international Lei Mang-fung opening their account after only six seconds following a quick pass from Perry Young.
