The Mass Transit Railway Corporation said yesterday it had no immediate plans to tell contractors to speed up the airport railway project, fearing it would raise costs. MTRC project director Russell Black said the corporation would wait until all the heavy civil construction work was completed before negotiating with contractors. It would also wait for the formal announcement of the opening date of the new airport before taking action, he said. 'I believe contractors would like to discuss with us the additional payment they can get from the contracts . . . but from the commercial point of view, we should leave it as late as possible,' Mr Black said. The airport railway is scheduled to begin operations next June, but the opening of the airport is planned for April. Secretary for Transport Gordon Siu Kwing-chue said he was confident that the airport railway would be ready before the airport and there would be no delays.
