WINFORD was ready to score early last season and he's well worth looking out for again come September.

He put in a very big effort last night, just missing out on the tierce position when he was short-headed for third place by Jolly Good Winner in the fifth event, which was won by Powernamic.

The experienced handicapper was ridden by the very inexperienced but highly promising 10-pound claimer, Vincent Sit, and together they were very slowly away.

Winford can blow the start, but more importantly he was then forced to travel wide down the back and swing very wide into the straight before making up serious ground over the last 200 metres in this 1,400-metre event.

It was a huge run from Winford to battle on so bravely and finish so close and he should drop seven pounds or so and start next season from a very handy rating down into the middle of Class Five.

And, as he showed when scoring first-time out this campaign, he is one of those horses who doesn't take too much getting ready and can go on to race well fresh for his very capable trainer Andy Leung Ting-wah.
