In the run-up to Hong Kong's return to China, a photographic show entitled The Present and Future of Hong Kong has opened in Lisbon. Xinhua (New China News Agency) reported that the 16-day show, which opened last week, was being co-sponsored by the city authorities and the Chinese embassy in Lisbon. Chinese ambassador Wei Dong told the opening ceremony the return of Hong Kong was of historic importance to China. Through the show, people could come to understand the history of Hong Kong, the Chinese policy of 'one country, two systems, Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong, a high degree of autonomy, and prosperity and stability', as well as Hong Kong people's confidence in their future, he said. 'The colonial rule of Hong Kong by Britain which lasted more than one-and-a-half centuries is coming to an end. 'I believe, under the guide of the Basic Law, Hong Kong will have a more brilliant future.' Portuguese government and Lisbon municipality officials were present at the opening ceremony.
