Marks and Spencer has initiated a management programme to develop local managers in order to keep pace with expansion in Hong Kong.

By 2000 the company is expected to have 15 stores in Hong Kong and doubled the sales turnover.

To meet this challenge, the company set up the Self Development Group (SDG). The group was built on existing management development and aimed at developing a pool of committed, skilled managers who would drive the expanding business.

Group members were nominated by line managers based upon current performance and future potential.

The programme enhanced the skills required by Marks and Spencer's behavioural criteria for management success.

The SDG began with a three day programme consisting of assessment exercises, management skill training and writing of personal development plans.

Additionally, a group sponsor was appointed to reinforce senior management commitment, to bind the group members together and to share expertise.
