Less than one per cent of 100,000 elderly recipients of the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) scheme have applied for resettlement in Guangdong, legislators were told.
In response to a question by Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood legislator Mok Ying-fan, the Secretary for Health and Welfare Katherine Fok Lo Shiu-ching said they had received 216 applications in April and May for redirecting CSSA payments to Guangdong. She said 109 of those applications had been approved.
Democrat legislator Fred Li Wah-ming attributed the cool response to the elderly people's worry over medical expenses in China.
