The Congress (I) Party wants to rope in assassinated prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's son Rahul as a possible vote-catcher.
Congress president Sita Ram Kesri has requested Gandhi's widow Sonia to allow him to enter politics. The 27-year-old, who has completed studies at Harvard University, is in New York. Mr Kesri's aides said he was 'more politically inclined' than his mother and sister.
The Nehru-Gandhi family dynasty has led the party to victory in seven general elections and to defeat in two. After Rajiv Gandhi's death, his widow rejected an invitation to become party president and enter Parliament. She also blocked Congress moves to involve her younger daughter Priyanka.
Congress won 28 per cent of the vote at last year's election, but needs another 10 per cent to seize power.
