Bill Collins, one of the world's best-known race callers, died yesterday in Melbourne. He was 69.
Collins finally succumbed after fighting a long battle against cancer.
He began his career as a commentator in 1943, calling provincial meetings in country Victoria, but soon graduated to calling harness racing in Melbourne.

In 1953, Collins really began making a name for himself when he joined Melbourne radio station 3DB as the number three race caller.
The following year he became the station's number one racing commentator, and his reputation and standing continued on an upward spiral.

He became known as 'The Accurate One', and his achievements included calling the Washington International as well as three runnings of the Epsom Derby.
