Wharf (Holdings) telephone offshoot New T&T has introduced an encryption service for voice and fax calls as a way of fending off unwanted eavesdropping.
New T&T president Leslie Harris said it was the first such service in Hong Kong.
'Research suggests three out of every 10 boardrooms in Asia have been bugged at some time,' he said.
'Considering the value of commercial secrets, the cost of paying to encrypt calls is a small price to pay.' New T&T's service would provide a device which scrambles the information at source and decodes once at the company's exchange.
The call is then routed unscrambled to its destination, having been protected through the most vulnerable part of its journey.
Mr Harris said the service would cost a few hundred dollars a month.
