Anthropology teaching will be changed to make it more practical and give students a better chance of finding good jobs, according to academics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The university offers the only course in anthropology - the study of human society, behaviour, customs and beliefs - in the territory.
Only about 20 students start the course each year.
'Most of the local students regard anthropology as a marginal course. They think the course is impractical and useless,' said Maria Tam Sui-mi, an associate professor at the university's Department of Anthropology.
'More Hong Kong-related elements should be added to the present curriculum to meet market demand. Although the curriculum is cross-border in nature, an understanding of local culture could be offered by increasing references to Hong Kong society,' she said.
Local politics, economics and culture should be reflected.
