A new credit-based learning system at Hong Kong Polytechnic University will benefit design students from the beginning of the 1998 academic year. Speaking at the opening of the 96-97 Diploma Show, Professor John Frazer, head of the School of Design, said students would get more choice. 'Under the new system, design students can arrange their own courses in order to fit the real needs of society,' he said. Professor David Meredith, Dean of the Faculty of Communication, said: 'Apart from the greater flexibility, the credit system will also lead to the introduction of language and general education, which is good for the students.' Three research centres have been set up in the School of Design. Co-ordinator of the Asian Design Research Centre Dr Hazel Clark said the main objective was to encourage and support research into design in Hong Kong and China, with emphasis on cultural and economic contexts.
